Background

In a world where the population is expected to exceed 9 billion by 2050 and there is increasing intensity in the exploitation and use of resources of all kinds, there is a major market opportunity for new products, services and systems which support increasing prosperity and standards of living for all while reducing their impact on the environment. This is recognised in European policy, which describes eco-innovation as being “all forms of innovation – technological and non-technological, new products and services and new business practices – that create business opportunities and benefit the environment by reducing their impact, or by optimizing the use of resource (including energy use)”. In its joint calls, ECO-INNOVERA calls for multidisciplinary research projects which include social, environmental, market and technological issues. All proposals should state clearly what added benefits they hope to provide to the ECO-INNOVERA network. This could include policy recommendations to support the broader take-up of eco-innovation, e. g. innovative proliferation and dissemination, contributions to standards and norms, provision of case studies for dissemination to the broader network.
